"Twilight" Director Booted from the Franchise?

"Twilight" Director Booted from the Franchise?Submit Comment
"Twilight" made a ton of money, already earning about than $100 million more domestically than its $37 million budget. Summit Entertainment knew that it was going to be a big hit. In fact, they greenlit a sequel before the first movie appeared in theaters.

Now, Summit has decided that director Catherine Hardwicke will not be returning for the second installment called "New Moon," even though "Twilight" made her a female director with the biggest opener.

DeadlineHollywoodDaily is reporting that Summit never told Hardwicke about getting kicked off the franchise, but studio insiders are claiming that this will definitely happen. "To add insult to injury, Hardwicke can now look forward to being grilled by the press for days on end," said one source.

What I want to know is if Summit is unhappy with her helming skills or are they simply switching directors like the James Bond and Harry Potter franchises have been doing. Several sources believe it's the former.

Do you think it's fair that Hardwicke will not get a chance to direct a second film after the amazing box office results of the first movie?

Why wouldn't they kick her off it?! The movie f*cking sucked. But, i can't say im surprised, the books were disatrous.

Once again I have said this a hundred times with the exception of Penny Marshall All and I mean ALL female directors suck.

she looks like a witch so maybe they are casting her as an actor instead of director

She didn't get the highest female opening for a director because of how good she was or how good the movie was. She was handed an instant smash due to the huge source books. And the first movie was green-lit before the books were as big as they are. That's why they got a small budget and a small artsy director. Now they have way more money and will probably try and nab David Yates or something, hell maybe even Joss Whedon.

Joss Whedon is way too much of a guy to be able to relate to the source material...a female director was an interesting choicee but when we look at Hardwicke's technical capabilities it was obvious she has no command of special effects- which is the one thing that keeps taking you out of the film...you can hate on it all you like- but Twilight was decent...but that's the problem- a book series with this much exposure doesnt deserve to be meddling.

...in mediocrity.

well, no offense to her, but it wasn't HER NAME that made it such a box office hit, it was the franchise's name. a nutless monkey could've made the first Twilight movie and all the little teenage girls would STILL pay millions just to fawn over their beloved Edward. sad.

why? the movie was good, there is no reaon for it.bv;jdbv'sdbverbv;fvoifdb!@#$%^&*()+_)(*&^%$#@!hehehe

I agree Necronullus, most do suck, WITH the exception of Penny Marshall.

Have a HUGE female name PRODUCE it...and give it to the man to direct. That way the female heart remains- but the film can have some balls in terms of action and dramatic impact

Sofia Coppola, who's with me? . HA

Sophia Coppola? As in the director of Marie Antoinette? No.

I was kidding. Who cares who directs it the books were horrible.
ladyhornet_05 writes:

Well it's not as if any of those mindless fangirls that watched the movie will care who direct the next one. As long as they get their no-talent, marginally good-looking teen idols back in the sequels they'll be happy. And its not like switching directors will improve the crappy franchise anymore. God, I hate Twilight so much...

The thing is: good money doesn't equal good movie. The army of millions of emotionally starved, hannah montana blasting teenage girls that paid to the film means the ticket sales were great, but doesn't mean the movie was good.
