"Punisher: War Zone" Has a Disastrous OpeningPosted: December 7th, 2008 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
"Four Christmases" took first place at the box office for the second week in a row, dropping a modest 41% to $18 million. Decline is particularly impressive given the tough comparison to last Friday, a holiday. New Line's comedy has now earned a total of $70.8 million in 12 days.
"Twilight" came in No 2, as it dropped 50% to $13.2 million, bringing its total to $138.6 million and crushing its $37 million budget.
Weekend's only new pic in wide release was "Punisher: War Zone," which bowed to a dismal $4 million at 2,508 locations. That's less than a third of what the studio's first "Punisher" pic took when it opened in 2004.
Sony BMG's first pic, "Cadillac Records" opened at 686 theaters and grossed a decent $3.5 million.
"Frost/Nixon" bowed to an estimated $180,000 from just three theaters in New York, LA and Toronto, giving it a per-play average of $60,000, the second highest of the year.

Hahaha. That sux. Punisher is just not a bankable comic book movie. They need to stop trying. What i'm more interested in is how well Frost/Nixon is doing. I wish it was a worldwide release, I would so go see it.

This is excellent news. There was nothing wrong with the last "Punisher" flick, but the powers that be just had to give the hero (or antihero depending on how you judge Frank Castle) it a makeover. Glad to see their efforts have failed miserably. This shouldn't trouble Lionsgate though; I'm sure they're rolling in dough from the last "Saw" flick - now, there's a series that needs revamping (or just a flat-out stake through the heart).

I gasp when I imagine someone watching Jane's Punisher without also imagining them rushing to remove the dvd. Having said that, who is surprised that a poorly made flick with little marketing, starring a bunch of nobodies, following years in the wake of the first awful remake and offering zero to a story-hungry audience made very little on opening day? War Zone couldn't handle a Care Bears remake, much less the flicks currently in theaters.

Punisher: War Zone had poor/no advertising, and was released in December (where action movies go to die.) If they wanted to give it a fighting chance they would have released it in late July or early August. I'll wait to see it in January-when it's on DVD.

I don't what you guys have been watching, but I've inundated with crappy TV commercials for it.
Also, Jane's version is by no means a great movie, but it is watchable and kind of fun.

I went to see it, and as far as brainless action movies go, it was at least decent. It was a better reason to watch some gore than any of the recent Saw movies. And yeah, it was much better than the Thomas Jane train wreck.

Well...maybe it's finally dead now? Fans can stop complaining- ya got 'your movie' which was some pretty gross yet cool as hell shit kickery...but the only new Punisher we will EVER see will surely be PG-13...and it will have a story.

It's so weird how hard of a time Hollywood is having with the Punisher, hyper-violence tough guy shit should be easy yet it sounds like yet another bomb. Damn shame, Ray Stevenson looks the part to a tee and deserves some recognition following the brilliant and short lived Rome series. (F you HBO)

I saw it over the weekend and give it two thumbs meh. (Alas, it's still a long way down to rival that steaming turd known as Ghost Rider.) They built the entire plot around what should have only been a ten-minute intro. Yet another example as to why Marvel kept The Avengers franchise in-house to produce.

Yeah...hard to make a revenge movie work unless you have some smarts behind it. They should have made it a TV show. Kind of along the lines as the old Incredible Hulk series. I mean...I used to read little bit of the War Journal comic back in the day and I remember Punisher being fairly interesting with his Van full of gadgets and guns. He was kind of like "Military Batman". Seems like you could find some way to make that interesting for a movie. It would be hard though. Doesn't matter now I guess. They f#@!ed up the Punisher for at least 10 years before they could try to relaunch it. Maybe 15 years.

the only reason it tanked is because of the R rating, it's amazing how it got such a high rating when shit films like saw get pg13, any r rated film will make max 10 million, fucking bullshit, because this was actually an excellent action flick.
