Viggo Mortensen Explains "The Road" DelaySubmit Comment
AICN chatted with Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises) about the upcoming big screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's bestseller "The Road," which keeps getting pushed back by The Weinstein Company. So why haven't it been released in theaters yet?

"My understanding is that they know that they've got a story that a lot of people want to see, because of the book," explained Mortensen. "And, the people that read the book, which are many, were very moved by it and by this relationship between this boy and this man, in particular, in that setting. And, I think that they are really aware of the fact that they've got one chance to do it, and if there's any little things that they still want to work on a little more, to get it just right, whether it's the music --I don't know what it is -- a variety of things, they want to do it right. And, if you rush it out before you feel in good conscience it's there ... So, I am disappointed. I wanted to see it. I want to see how it is."

There are many questions circling this film, including whether the ending has been changed and whether audiences would want to see such a depressing picture. And with all the buzz building up for "The Road," they better finish it as soon as possible, if TWC wants for it to be an Oscar contender.

Not a bad book, but I'm a little skeptical about how well the father and son dynamics will translate to the big screen, especially considering that this interaction is part of what made the book so moving. The simple, spartan even, writing style was absolutely essential in pairing these two characters off in a emotionally meaningful way. Hopefully they have a script and an editing outlook that reflects the book's very important quality, or this film will just fall flat as just another dull post-apocalyptic fairytale.

My fingers are crossed and I hope they get to make the film the want to and not what some suit wants. Who cares if its depressing, if it is in the book good.

That comment from Viggo was perfect. I'm so relieved that they are trying their hardest to get this film right and live up to the book. It's my favorite book by McCarthy and coming right off the heels of the Coen bros. adaptation will be exciting. Thanks for this update.
