"Twilight" Breaking Box Office Records

"Twilight" Breaking Box Office RecordsSubmit Comment
Summit Entertainment's teen vampire romance "Twilight" opened to over $70 million from 3,419 screens at the domestic box office, taking first place this weekend.

The film took a big bite out of Disney's 3-D toon "Bolt," which opened to an estimated $27 million from 3,651 theaters, of which more than 900 were 3-D. "Bolt" virtually tied for No. 2 with James Bond holdover "Quantum of Solace," which grossed an estimated $27.4 million for a total of $109.5 million in its first 10 days.

Usually, an opening as strong "Twilight" is reserved for kid-friendly franchises or male-driven superhero pics. A full 75% of "Twilight's" audience were females, reflecting the enormous popularity of Stephenie Meyer's bestselling books among tween girls and teenage girls, according to exit polling released by Summit. One of the biggest surprises of the weekend came in that 45% of the audience were over the age of 25, indicating that "Twilight" crossed.

Helmed by Catherine Hardwicke, "Twilight" marks the best opening ever for a female filmmaker.

"Twilight" is an enormous victory for Summit, which announced Saturday that it is already planning sequel "New Moon."

You know that teenage girls are obsessive, that is why this movie is going to make the big bucks. I mean look at what that same audience did to Titanic. But Twilight won't get any of my money, those feaking vampires are so gay the make Interview with the Vampire look like freaking Die Hard.

you people need to relax. this is actually a great day for the movie entertainment business. for all intents and purposes, nobody should be seeing movies based on the state of our economy. the fact that this movie almost DOUBLED its budget in the first weekend is a very good thing.

also, does the guy who runs this website just copy and paste from variety?

"also, does the guy who runs this website just copy and paste from variety?". . .doubtful. Variety can afford proofreaders. And more vampire sh*t? Look people, vampires do not exist. Like unicorns and leprechauns, films about vampires are boring. And f*cking clichéd. How many neck-biting scenes can a person watch before their brain goes entirely numb from monotony? We need more hard-core sci-fi, thinking films, not this garbage. Stupid Americans.

By the way, movie profits will do jack sh*t for the economy. Who ever tried to connect movie revenue with improving the economy is genuinely ignorant. Furthermore, what's the obsession with money? Just because people are too damned dumb to demand quality entertainment doesn't mean you can justify the situation through profit. Not everything is about money, and money certainly isn't everything.

Finally, don't f*cking turn cinema into the WB! Get it? There's a difference between cinema and teenybopper soap operas. Enough sh*t caters to dumb teenagers and kids already!

I got dragged to this heaping pile of sh*t on opening night with my girlfriend, my brother, his gf and some of their friends. As bad as the movie was (and it's HORRIBLE) I had such a good time laughing at the tween's clutching their books, looking at the home made tshirts (Yes, I'm in love with a fictional vampire..your point?" - I sh*t you not) but my favorite part of the evening was looking at all the sad, SAD teenie bopper faces as the throngs of kids came pouring into the lobby in protest. This fick is so bad even the retard kids hated it. I think it's about a 5.3 on IMDB which, for an opening weekend is horrrrrible and the ranking will no dout plummet in the next few weeks. While it's making money, rest assured it's all hype and no substance.

It's a damn shame that our American youth can be so easily entertained by such drivel. Absolutely saddening.

Everyone on here trashing Twilight is absolutely and unconditionally pathetic. I myself was not a fan of the books before being dragged to the theatres, but I have to say that this movie wasn`t bad at all. They did an excellent job of combining all sorts of elements to appease all it`s viewers. I guarantee that the sequel, 'New Moon' will not fail in it`s profits either. All of you dragging the movie down and commenting on all the negative aspects the movie had to offer, when most of you haven`t even seen it, is downright idiotic. You are entitled to your own opinion, but bashing a movie with no concore backup or support of your theories is ridiculous. As for 'minkowski', I fail to see how your point is even vaild. You claim that movies with mythical creatures are cliche and boring due to the fact that they don`t exist, yet you yourself are a fan of sci fi? Which by the way stands for science FICTION. Most of the comments on here are straight garbage and poorly thought out anger releasing posts.
