"X-Men: First Class" Hires Writer

20th Century Fox is gearing up to continue its "X-Men" franchise with a younger set of mutants in a film called "X-Men: First Class."

Josh Schwartz, the creator and executive producer of "Gossip Girls" as well as "The OC" and "Chuck," is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide. Writing assignment has also included the possibility of directing the pic, but so far Schwartz has opted not to take the helm.

Fox is keeping quiet on plans and declined to confirm details of the project. The studio has been considering ways to continue its successful series of "X-Men" movies after the third installment, the Brett Ratner-helmed "X-Men: The Last Stand," collected $459 million in 2006.

Fox has been leaning toward using the younger characters introduced in the previous pics in future installments -- teenagers with powers taught at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

Resulting film would likely draw from elements of the Marvel comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics.

Is an "X-Men" film about young mutants a good idea?

Sounds like it would be a better TV show than a film.

Sorry, but this movie is only going to work if they have Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast and Angel as the First Class of X-Men. Otherwise, the name is pointless. I'm all up for that movie. I personally dont want a movie full of young mutants. Do a prequel, showing how Xavier's school was formed, and for gods sake, give Cyclops some more screentime!

ANd with my last comment, I meant "I personally dont want to see a movie full of new young random mutants." I would much rather see young Cyke, Jean, Iceman, Beat and Angel.

Agreed, TV series. But a high budgeted one please.

With X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Magneto, a movie detailing the "first class" of X-Men doesn't sound far-fetched. Or terrible. But Johhny Neat is right, it would need to be Cyclops, Beast, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Iceman, and Angel. Only problem is movie continuity. Cyclops, Jean, and Beast were already adults by the time Angel came on the scene. And While they were adults, Iceman was still a teenaged student. If they (Marvel) are planning to make the "X-Men Origins" films a reboot, then maybe. But otherwise, "First Class" would either break movie continuity or be a complete waste of time.

And for God's sake keep Brett Ratner out of the deal!!

bullsh*t, it would probably be kick ass hopefully it turns out

they already messed up the story. angel, iceman were COMPLETELY different in the movies. Black_Jack is right, they would have to completely change the story around to flow with the other movies. and that i am not comfortable with.

NO... terrible idea getting new actors to play already existing characters - they have already been cast......

tv show. they brought iceman in 2, angel and beast in 3, and already killed jean and cyclops. so theres no way it could be a sequel or prequel. unless they're planning on restarting the series. id b 4 it then or 4 a tv series. like really tho, get rid a ratner, he ruined the series. xmen was ok, not much of a plot but still an ok movie, x2 was amazing, x3 sucked!, havent heared much on magneto, but wolverine does look good. why? cause ratner isnt in it, and theres not random characters, its all characters that r suppose 2 b n that time zone.its bought time they brought in deadpool and gambit, and where the hell did nightcrawler go? he just disappeared after x2, again, another part of the series ruined when ratner took over.
