Academy Disqualifies "The Dark Knight" Score

Academy Disqualifies "The Dark Knight" ScoreSubmit Comment
The score for "The Dark Knight" has been disqualified by the executive committee of the Academy music branch. Formal letters to that effect are expected to go out this week to composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, who collaborated on the music.

Their previous collaboration, on "Batman Begins," was similarly disqualified in 2005.

Sources inside the committee said that the big issue was the fact that five names were listed as composers on the music cue sheet, the official studio document that specifies every piece of music in the film.

Zimmer said, in an interview with Variety prior to this week's Academy action, that listing multiple names on the cue sheet was a way of financially rewarding parts of the music team who helped make the overall work successful.

Zimmer, Howard and the other three individuals -- music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe -- reportedly signed an affidavit stating that the score was primarily the work of Zimmer and Howard.

That apparently wasn't enough for the majority of the committee, which was also supplied with documentation indicating that more than 60%, but less than 70%, of the score was credited to Zimmer and Howard.

Oh well. Dark Knight will still win a ton of other Oscars.

I guess? F*ck man it's the Oscars not the MTV awards...besides Heath Ledger- this film's Oscar ambitions are inflated. But who knows...it made a sh*tload of money so maybe they'll throw a bunch on the Academy and get what they want. It's how most best pics win anyways...

People miss the point. The fact that a comic book movie is actually in the conversation of the Oscars is enough of an accomplishment. It gives the genre some much needed respect.

Then IronMan gets thrown into the mix as well and everything you talk about is undone...popcorn films are popcorn films whether they're in the hands of crystal makers or not...It has plenty of depth for a comic book action film- but it's missing an awful lot of key components and dramatic layers for a Best Picture. It has a good point, but it just isn't the film to get it across- it would have been if the motivation was to back up this subject matter and themes completely, but really the motivation was to reinvigorate a blockbuster franchise. Any film with a character as rushed as Harvey/Two Face just isn't credible in my opinion- but yeah, the mere mention of it in the league is cool- but what did you expect from Nolan's work? It's great.

Iron Man was good, but when Dark Knight came out, i though Iron Man was kinda weak. It sucks though, TDK score is awsome!
