Fox Changes "Australia" Ending

Posted: November 11th, 2008 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Fox Changes "Australia" EndingSubmit Comment
The upcoming "Australia" film, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, has a budget of $120 million and will likely be a contender for the Best Picture Oscar. But the film's tragic ending, in which Kidman's love interest (Jackman) dies, has forced 20th Century Fox executives to put pressure on director Baz Luhrmann to do some rewrites.

The decision was made after negative responses to the movie's initial cut at test screenings. One reviewer said: "There is no reason to kill off Wolvie [Jackman played Wolverine in the X-Men trilogy]."

The studio believes that if they change the ending to a more uplifting one, it would spell greater success at the box office. What's strange is that "Australia" is being called "Titanic on land" due to its massive scale and epic story. But the star of "Titanic," Kate Winslet, lost her love interest (Leonardo DiCaprio) and the film went on to become the highest grossing movie ever.

The decision to change the ending has angered some Australian film fans. One wrote on Australia's Sunday Telegraph's website: "Baz clearly has no control of his film, or no ethics when it comes to putting the story he wanted to tell to the screen."

I'm glad they didn't give this treatment to The Green Mile. Death scenes can be great for a movie. And I don't think someone writing "There is no reason to kill off Wolvie" would be part of your movie's mainstream audience either. Another job well ruined by Fox Studios.

Sorry Titanic on Land. It is now corrected.

Hollywood and their lame unnecessary happy endings. One major reason Hollywood can't touch foreign films... That, intelligent writing and casting based on looks and not ability.

WTF??!?? One of my most anticipated movies of the year, and here you give away the ending!!!! Where's the spoiler warning, a-holes??!? I sure hope they change it now, so I can be surprised after all.

this is a Baz Luhrmann film. By now everyone should expect that one of the two star lovers would die in the end. He loves that stuff.

Australia and X-Men are two differents movies! Hugh Jackman's characters are different! If Baz Luhrmann wants this end, he has his reasons. Happy ending isn't always the best end for a movie. Why Baz Luhrmann hasn't got the final cut for this movie? Could you imagine one second if in 2001, Baz Luhrmann had to change Moulin Rouge! ending because screen test spectators will have to saw [spoiler.....] a happy ending! For studios, it's "money law" (even if the movie had to become very bad). Such a shame!

HAHA Titanic on Water? Yea glad that was corrected. This movie is insignificant and it's proven when they're that careless about the key points of the story. Go see Slumdog Millionaire for a creative story. And really, who would listen to someone identifying Hugh Jackman as Wolvie?

Jesus. Big f*cking spoiler there. Thanks a lot.

God Fox are a bunch of Morons, they tell the world they are changing its sad ending to a happeor one. Then they will say we decided to stick to the original ending. Tell me, how many people do they think will show up to the f*cking movie when they know what happens in the end!!

I hope that "wolvie" guy never watches The Prestige. His beloved mutant doesn't fare too well in the end against the Dark Knight.

This is what happens when you let a bunch of f**king nobodies with a notepad watch a great film...STOP listening to the opinions of people who can't even remember the name of the film's star despite opening and closing credits while having a pen and paper handy... Nobody would have known the ending if we weren't TOLD...hence they would have seen it anyways just like Titanic. GO the Cameron route- Titanic, Terminator, T2...killing off main characters hasn't spelled box-office disaster for him, not even when he produced Point Break (Swayze offs himself too)...ALL HITS. Studio meatbags.

I've sworn to never see Titanic thanks to the throngs of retards who wouldn't shut up about it during its release, a resolve that was only strengthened by Cameron's antics at the Oscars. I really dig Baz's stuff and I think Jackman has great presence and a classic, almost Eastwood-esque look in this film and I was looking forward to seeing it - I hope they don't push me to a similar decision. "Titanic on land"....sigh..
