Joe Johnston to Direct "Captain America"

Joe Johnston to Direct "Captain America"Submit Comment
Joe Johnston has inked a deal to direct "First Avenger: Captain America," Marvel Studios' take on its classic comic book character. No writers are on board, but the studio, which is hearing pitches, expects to hire shortly. At this point, the film is scheduled for release on May 6th, 2011.

Johnston first met with Marvel two years ago. When the two parties clicked, general talks turned into Captain America-specific meetings, with much of the project's current direction resulting from those early conversations.

"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,'" said producer Kevin Feige. "From 'Rocketeer' to 'October Sky' to 'The Wolfman,' you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one."

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he became a symbol of the war effort, in and out of comics.

The character disappeared in the 1950s but was revived during the early era of Marvel Comics. He was reintroduced as part of the Avengers, the absence explained by having him being in a state of suspended animation during a war mission until found by the superteam.

"Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set "Avengers."

Do you think Joe Johnston is a good enough choice of "Captain America"?

this is going to be marvel's toughest film yet - captain america does NOT lend himself to modern filmmaking as easily as batman and iron man. still, there's potential for a director with guts and some savvy, and johnston's got a fun resume. like iron man, this will probably come down to picking a lead stuffed with charisma.

Yes, It's all going to come down to editing and lighting though.

It makes sense when going back to the comics...base the movie in world war 2- then you have Cap as the fish out of water once they release him from suspended animation into modern times...I can see a little more clearly how they're working these together.

I'm not sure at all. Johnston is a very mediocre director, I haven't liked any of his films but jumanji... which I saw at 13 years old. He even made a mess with the Jurassic franchise! But I thought the same about Jon "Zathura" Favreau, so...

Listen up Johnston!!! Get the Ultimate's Steve Rogers story origin, mixed with Private Ryan visuals and cast Matthew McConaughey in the lead and we have an a class recipe for awesome. Case closed.

why are ppl still wanting Matthew McConaughey for this role? he's just a stoner beach bum that can only play those kinds of parts. this movie would be ruined if he played cpt. america.

not goin to pass judgement on the choice of director as i wouldnt have thought that favreau would have done such an amazing job with iron man, if they have been talking to him for two years then he obviously shows the same passion for capt america that john showed for iron man. i agree that do the ww2 stuff in an savin private ryan style, i think matthew McConaughey would be good, i bit out there like downey jnr was. i dont think that capt america is going to be a hard character to fit into a modern scene for the avengers. i think he is the perfect character what better character to highlight the huge political and economical changes since world war 2. im not american but they could use this character to show that there is nothing wrong with national pride, the american nation has been lied to, that america has walked down the wrong path a little, greed has taken over a little, but at heart the american people have the same values. that they have now turned a corner they had a wake up call with the bush administration but they have turned the corner with a black president taking them in a new direction a new dawn for a new day, and what better time for the ultimate symbol of national pride to make a come back...... obviously the administrations wouldnt have to be called the bush and obama but you get the idea.

I thin Favaru should stick to Iron Man, its his baby, and we jsut see how this guy goes with the Cpatain. I love the idea of Captain America having a Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers style to it, that will be amazing. But not too sure about Maconohey. For some reason i thought of Matthew Fox (Lost) or even Damein Lewis (Life, Band of Brothers) for the main role, not sure what Captain America looks like underneath the mask but i suppose all they need to do is dye the actors hair a bit
