Brett Ratner will Direct "Conan"

Brett Ratner will Direct "Conan"Submit Comment
Director Brett Ratner (Red Dragon, Rush Hour) has been trying to make a decision whether to helm a fourth installment of "Beverly Hills Cop" or take on the "Conan" franchise. He has now made up his mind and "Conan" is the film Ratner will direct.

Ratner was attracted to the "Conan" script by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly (Sahara), who looked to Robert E. Howard's original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the character. The writers are doing a quick polish to incorporate some of Ratner's ideas.

Millennium and Lionsgate are eyeing a potential franchise and envision a very R-rated approach in the $85 million budget range. Preproduction is under way for a shoot at Nu Image's Nu Boyana Studio in Bulgaria.

"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," said Millennium's Avi Lerner. "This is a coup for Millennium Films and proves that our choice of projects and material is attracting much higher-profile directors and actors."

Ratner is currently in final negotiations to helm "Conan," which is aiming to hit theaters in early 2010.

Is anyone happy that Ratner will take over the "Conan" franchise?

Brett Ratner is a bloated, goateed leech attempting to suck all life and creativity out of the cinema. With the exception of "Money Talks" and the first two "Rush Hour" pictures, he has worked tirelessly to dismantle the art of movie making at its very seams. Ratner's ideas are trite and absurd, showcasing a level of retardation thought exclusive only to Helen Keller, the Ku Klux Klan, Carlos Mencia, and the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" writing staff. He is motivated by greed and will stop at nothing until he pummels the film industry to the ground. God help us.

We saw the origin illustrated well enough in the original. Can't they just go ahead and do something different? Stupid question...I wouldn't let this guy remake 'Ishtar'...

PASS. They should have done the "Conan's Legacy" idea back in 1998 where an aging King Conan (Schwarzeneggar) passed on his empire to his son, which was supposed to be wrestler HHH. It fell through because Fox didn't want to take a gamble on it.

Lucas mutilated Star Wars, Spielberg/Lucas ruined Indy, McG will probably further destroy the Terminator series and now this crap. Will any of my beloved childhood franchises go untouched? Next thing you know they'll have Uwe Bol remaking Jaws...

Only because Ratner 'ruined' the X-Men franchise has he earned the undying hate of fat and ugly loser fanboys the world over. Did Rtner write X3? Nope, but he gets all the hate. Look at the guy's fiomography. Pretty weak, but somehow Ratner, according to c-prime's juvenile bloviating, is 'tearing the industry apart at the seams'? You take your silly comic book films far too seriously. At least Ratner gave us some action in X3, rather than Singer's dreary and pretentious moralizing. No one seems to realize the damage Singer did single-handedly yo the Superman mythos with Superman Returns, a film that unintentionally ridicules DC's landmark character while stunning the audience into stupification. I'd rather watch a Ratner film anyday over a Singer flick.

dang it.....he better not make it anything like The Scorpion King.

To minkowski: Look, you can prefer Brett Ratner over Bryan Singer if you want to (though God knows why you want to), but I hold the first two X-men flicks in such high esteem because they're among they are both enthralling, smoothly executed pieces guaranteed to satisfy both first time viewers and long-term fans of the X-men saga. I blame Ratner for "X3" because: 1) his movie lacks the phenomenal character development found in Singer's two, deciding instead to focus solely on Wolverine for an hour and a half (not hating, but aren't they already giving him his own spinoff?); 2) trading story away for mostly mindless violence (excusable to the average summer movie goer but unforgivable by my standards); and 3) oh, yeah, because his f*cking name is attached to this egregious piece of sh*t! You know what, you're absolutely right though. Maybe I should attribute the crappiness of "X3" to the makeup department or someone else besides your beloved Ratner. He may not have written it, but when a person looks back on what a dismal failure "The Last Stand" was, his name is the first one that comes up. Besides, such piss-poor is characteristic of the bullsh*t Ratner's been concocting since the inception of his career. You're certainly entitled your opinion, sir (even though your assertion that Ratner's work surpasses that of the marvelously gifted Singer is immensely laughable and a testament to your idiocy), but he ruined what could have been a terrific conclusion to an engaging comic book saga. Oh, and I'll take "The Usual Suspects" over "The Family Man" and "After the Sunset" any day. P.S. - Are you really going to argue the mental aptitude of the deafblind with me? Jesus Christ, it's a f*cking joke. Pull Ratner's c*ck out of your mouth and laugh for God's sake.

Monkowski you might have a point in Singer's drowning on Superman but I'm sorry that mistake or misfire was a product of not being able to handle one's own fandom. Bratner is a whole differentcproblem, LACK of TALENT and of GOOD TASTE, things Bratner lacks. He is a hack best suited as substitute... Red Dragon anyone? Sorry the odds are in favor of him destroying Conan as we loved him. Plus why doesn't Hollywood move on into Conan "The King"? We don't anymore origin re-tellings when this story just needs to continue. This isn't a tired series needing a reboot like Bobd did. It also doesn't have a director like Robocop got. Damn I hate Ratner, worst thing Spielberg's ever allowed to happen next to the guns being replaced in E.T., taking Indiana Jones past the suspension of disbelief and not taking the director's seat for future Star Wars films.

Someone at Millenium must know how much we all hate Ratner. He's such a bad director (including Rush Hour 1 & 2, ALL HIS FILMS SUCK), and everyone knows. The problem: even though we know this, Ratner's Conan will top at the box office and become a franchise.
PrevalentMind writes:

"Someone at Millenium must know how much we all hate Ratner..." With the crap Nu Image and Millenium are usually know for pumping out they should be damn happy that even the likes of Ratner would even consider to be attached to their banner. So yes, they know what you think- but don't care. They have to start bringing in better directors at some point- and I doubt they can afford Scorcese.

The problem with Ratner is he is incapable of giving his films substance. They are fluff and cheese. He should stick to comedy/action hybrids but not be trusted with franchises such as Conan, Superman, etc. As for the Singer comparison...well, there is no comparison really. He is partially to blame for the turd that was Superman Returns, but that film's failure and absurdity mostly had to do with the writing team...who are Singer's friends and co-writers of the X-men so the studio trusted them. Then of course there was the horrible casting of Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane which was really Spacey's fault because she horned him up in "Beyond the Sea" so he suggested to Singer she should play Lois.

Yeah, c-prime, you're pretty much a huge hypocrite. You trash Ratner for ruining X3, but then berate minkowski for doing to same to Singer. Ratner is far from as bad as you've deluded yourself into thinking.
