Will Smith Stars in "Oldboy" RemakePosted: November 7th, 2008 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's "Oldboy." DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new pic will be distributed by Universal.
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

Oldboy was an interesting film that cannot be done in Hollywood let alone with such big names attached. This will be a watered down version for sure. Anyhow why make it again period?

NOOOOOOOOO. With these two the twist will SURELY change...they're turning one of the most controversial and disturbing character studies into a useless popcorn flick...
WTF happened with Justin Lin? I thought he had the remake rights. I'd rather see a korean property in the hands of someone who respects that particular film culture.
As a parent, Will Smith simply WILL NOT do the twist...ridiculous. Just bloody ridiculous. Let this be a rumour and get Spielberg's old ass back to making TinTin the ginger kid mystery. The man is becoming a shell of the imagination he used to possess only a mere decade ago.

I know that coming up with new ideas can be tough, but has Hollywood simply given up?

OH PLEASE LET THIS NOT HAPPEN! there is no way they will do it any justice, especially starring will smith! he will never have the story turn out the way it does which is the entire point of the film.
TERRIBLE NEWS!

This movie WILL suck. They'll change the more shocking elements to suit the tastes of American audiences. I will not be watching this.

Most Asian movies demand to be remade. They usually have great, original ideas(not their horror movies though...Ringu sucked ass), but their execution is often poor and campy. Will Smith is an awesome actor, and I'd love to watch a version of Oldboy where I'm not embarrassed by how cheesy it is.
