Christopher Nolan Discusses "Justice League of America"

Christopher Nolan Discusses "Justice League of America"Submit Comment
LA Times had a chance to speak to "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan about the upcoming "Justice League of America," which Warner Bros has been delaying but still plans to make. Nolan believes that Batman is absolutely needed in the "JLA" film, but Batman that he has been developing in "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" won't fit into a universe where Superman exists.

"I don't think our Batman, our Gotham, lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization," said Nolan. "It goes back to one of the first things we wrangled with when we first started putting the story together: Is this a world in which comic books already exist? Is this a world in which superheroes already exist?"

He continued: "If you think of 'Batman Begins' and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position -- we didn't address it directly in the film, but we did take the position philosophically -- that superheroes simply don't exist. If they did, if Bruce [Wayne] knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that's a completely different decision that he's making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It's a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation."

Do you think Nolan's Batman would be different if he knew that Superman existed?

if they do make JLA, and if its different director, try not to immitate Nolans batman, it will suck big time.

Technically there is no reason Superman could exist in Nolan's world. They could be happening very close to each other and spark off after the third Bat film. I do understand where he is going with the issue of other Super Heroes being around and Bruce saying I want to be one too for Gotham.

JUST STOP MAKING JLA NOW PLEASE.

Why couldn't Clark Kent out himself (come out the phone booth if you will) somewhere in the timeline after Batman Begins.

i think a JLA could be great if handled correctly however it couldnt be called the justice league of america, much in the same vain as in superman returns they dont say he stands for the american way, mainly due to the fact the world hates america right now and as a sell able world movie with super heroes from other planets and such why would they only stand for america? but i digress handle by a skilled movie maker it could work very well, handle a by a crap one like ratner then it could be proper pants....id be interested to see who theyd cast as batman and superman for this though.

nolan is f*cking full of himself...miller's dark knight and batman year one, existed in the same universe as supes and all the rest of the costumed freaks...and his bats is basically the same as nolan...as nolan borrowed from those works

Well, if they didn't call it JLA (Justice League of America) because the world "hates america" and that would screw up ticket sales, that would be the same disregard for the source material that screws over other comic book films. And N8R is right, Supes might have appeared as a hero after Batman Begins, or even after The Dark Knight. Maybe the Joker's acts of terrorism even inspired Clark Kent to take up the cape!

Which of course would also be disregarding source material.

green lantern is the man and so is flash so make the movie so they can be in it plus is there doin the same thing there doin 4 the avengers and making every hero have there own movie then nolan will be 2 old to direct it anyway

This movie WILL suck. And whoever says nolan is full of himself is full of sh*t. He is the best young director out there right now. Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Prestige, and Momento are all dope movies. Insomnia is good too. They may have taken Millers Batman but there is no reason at all to acknowledge other super heroes. Great decision on Nolans part.

"The world hates america", right thats why ppl are flocking here, even at great risk to do so. Come on.. Anyway, Nolan set a precedence with his Batman. To introduce a new vision of Batman so close to the success of DK while it's fresh in people's minds would be a colossal mistake

I hate the New batman films so the less Influence Nolan has on JLA the better, IMO

first of all this is stupid, these new batman movies aren't that good. they can't be because the guy playing batman sucks donkey balls!!! second of all has nobody even thought about the fact that in the comics when batman became batman there really weren't any superheroes in that world, they all came to be around the same time. Get off nolans d*ck!!!

Mr. Nolan...you messed up Batman from the beginning...so I don't think anyone really cares now if your Batman can fit into JLA or not...Just shove him in there just like you just threw together a script for Batman Begins. People will watch it regardless.
