Mark Millar Planning New "Superman" Trilogy

Mark Millar Planning New "Superman" TrilogySubmit Comment
Comic book writer Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass) wants to create an epic Superman story which will follow the entire life of Kal-El from his birth on Krypton a thousand years ago, until he is the last being left on Earth. [via Empire]

Millar has been working closely with a "big-Hollywood action director" who he refuses to name at this stage on a pitch for what he is calling the Magnum Opus of Superman stories. His idea is for an 8-hour saga, split into 3 films to be released a year apart, in a "Lord of the Rings" fashion.

"It's gonna be like Michael Corleone in the 'Godfather' films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him," said Millar. "'The Dark Knight' showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now."

He continued: "I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

Would you rather see Millar's idea or a sequel to "Superman Returns"?

Millar's been babbling about this for years. Too bad neither WB nor DC has any interest in making his plans reality. And 1000 years ago? and the last being on Earth as the sun explodes? LAME. I'll take a normal sequel, please.

omg .. a trilogy like that would be cool .. especially for peoople who dont really know Superman's whole story .. I didn't even know he ended up as one of the last on earth and started to lose his powers.

I'm all for it... as long as the "big-Hollywood action director" is not Uwe Boll.

Sounds like a good idea, if done seriously like Batman, but after watching him rape his own property, Wanted, I'm beyond suspect.

I have a sort of love/hate with Millar's stories. Typically I like his ideas but not so much his way of implementing them. That said, I think the "big" storyline sounds interesting but I'm not so sure an audience would buy into the last man on earth angle. Most of the non comic reading audience doesn't get the whole man of tomorrow bit or what Superman is really all about.I think the general public would rather just see a guy fly and pick up heavy objects, bounce bullets off his chest, etc. A long drawn out even "dark" (Hollywood buzzword right now) Superman just might not go over.

It's much too soon to do another Superman reboot. They tried with with Hulk and it didn't fly.

Hulk didn't fly? It was successful financially, critically, and with fans. WTF movie did you see?

I don't know. A Superman trilogy would be cool. That is, as long as Lex Luthor isn't the villain in all three movies. I have gotten so tired of Luthor as a villain. Sure, Lex is to Superman as The Joker is to Batman, but you can only take one villain so far. We'd tire of the Joker if there were 5 Batman Vs. Joker films. And the worst part is that Supes has plenty of good villains: Parasite, Doomsday, Darkseid, Riot, Metallo, General Zod. Any of those would make great movie villains.

When Millar is passionate about something (Red Son, Authority, Kick Ass, Wanted) he can create something compelling and exciting. Red Son was a very good book, give him a chance. It's not gonna get worse than Superman Returns.

"Hulk didn't fly? It was successful financially, critically, and with fans. WTF movie did you see?" Was it? Didn't it make less than the old Hulk domestically and cost a bit more to make? Critical reception was lukewarm at best. And fans didn't exactly mobbed the theaters like they did with Batman, Iron Man and Indiana Jones. Hulk was okay, but not Incredible.

he let hollywood destroy wanted, yet wants us to believe that he can build the better supes story? oh, and he will have to change dc continuity to do it...or has he forgotten about vandal savage? savage cant die, so he would be hanging and watching the world end too

Sounds interesting to me. Just hope they can get something rolling in a sensible manner and make a justifible and BELIEVEABLE story line.
