STYD had the chance to speak to actor Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) who defended the upcoming "S Darko" film, which is a follow-up to Richard Kelly's hit "Donny Darko."

"Look at the original 'Donnie Darko.' When it was first released, did anybody like it? No, it was a year later," he says. "Through people talking, people got it. We're in an opposite boat, because people loved the first one after a while. Maybe they'll warm up to this, too. Or, they'll hate the idea of it, but once they see it, I think they're going to turn around."

He continued: "It takes the idea of the film, and it goes beyond, answering and delving into more questions than 'Donnie Darko' did. A lot of people are pissed that Richard Kelly is not involved, but he did sell the idea. He did give the license to do it. So it's not like he's opposed to it."

"S. Darko" takes place in the summer of 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko's younger sister, Samantha (Daveigh Chase), who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. She and her best friend Corey (Briana Evigan) set off on a road trip to Hollywood in a bid to 'make it big', but their journey is cut short when their car breaks down unexpectedly, leaving them stranded in a small desert town. When a meteorite happens to crash-land nearby, Samantha is plagued by bizarre visions telling of the universe's end and it appears that their breakdown was part of some grander plan. When she finds out she was actually adopted by the Darkos, and that she is in no way related to Donnie, she must face her own demons and, in doing so, save the world and herself.

does anyone else think this sounds like a giant slap in the face to the original?

the original was a giant slap in the face for the director...We never saw the real movie until the directors cut...so I could frankly care less about Darko- who gives a sh*t really? Did you watch Pulse 2 even though you knew of its existence? No...or hopefully not...do the same with this one. They should have left it as the confusing, deep mess it ended as with the original.

sad when an actor doesnt get a movie...there is no point to the sequel...the original was a very personal film, couched in scifi fantasy...this sounds like sh*t
