EW has the first look at Mel Gibson in the upcoming thriller "Edge of Darkness," which is based on a BBC miniseries. This is the first lead role for Gibson since "Signs," which was released back in 2002. Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) commented on Gibson's return to movies: "I'm sure he was nervous — he's been behind the camera for years. But he didn't show it."
"Edge of Darkness" centers on a veteran cop (Gibson) whose only grown-up child (Bojana Novakovic) is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop unearths his daughter's secret life and discovers a world of corporate cover-ups and government collusion. Danny Huston takes on the role of a shady businessman while Shawn Roberts will play the role of the daughter's distraught boyfriend.
Robert De Niro was previously signed on to play an operative sent to clean up evidence in the murder. After two days on set, he left the project over "creative differences." De Niro was since replaced by Ray Winstone (The Departed, Indiana Jones 4).
