Lex Luthor is Back in "Superman Returns" Sequel

Lex Luthor is Back in "Superman Returns" SequelSubmit Comment
Fans have complained that Lex Luthor is not a strong enough villain to face off against Superman and that the man of steel needs to fight a more powerful evildoer in the "Superman Returns" sequel. Warner Bros agreed and has promised more action in the second installment, which they stated will be much darker. So why are they bringing Lex Luthor back?

According to The Independent, producers of the film will be paying Kevin Spacey "big bucks to reprise his role as Lex Luthor next year." It has been said that the sequel will begin shooting in 2009 to have the film ready by 2011.

What do you guys think, is it a good idea to bring Lex Luthor back, or should Warner Bros instead introduce a character like Doomsday into the franchise?

It's fine as long as Warner Bros actually makes him interesting. My problem with Lex Luthor was that his schemes were so ridiculous and his personality was so over-the-top that Spacey devolved him into a caricature. Make him complex, give him a motivation to hate Superman, make him more influential in the public arena (LexCorp, anyone?), and have Keven Spacey imbue Luthor with a genuine sense of menace. A great example of a villian with these traits can be found in Jeff Bridges' portrayal of Obidiah Stane from Iron Man.

No one beats Gene Hackman's Lex. But Spacey was pretty decent. Let him come back. Maybe he can make this movie good...even though he couldnt make the last one any better.

I'd like to see the studio lose the petty criminal aspect (ie. scamming the dying heiress out of her fortune) replace the bumbling henchmen with Mercy Graves and make Luthor the megalomaniac genius he is portrayed as in the comics. The brilliant business man and scientist whose ego and hubris won't allow him to tolerate the "alien" who constantly one ups and foils his plans.

Things like this are the reasons Superman's movie suck!

The mysterious return of a young General Zod, played by Jude Law anyone? Or even freaking better yet and what should have been used in Superman Returns, the arrival of Brainiac (The operating system version that runs Krypton and chronicles its history and information), who as followed Superman to Earth after having thought all Krytonians were eradicated, now wants to destory Superman and his new home.

What's wrong with having both Luther in the plot along with introducing Doomsday? Luthor's swagger and Doomsday's ass kickery? I'm there even if Brandon Routh comes back with the Christopher Reeves impression. Spacey was the only reason to watch the last flick along with the all too short plane crash sequence. I still don't like the idea of a dark Superman...make the tone dark- but certainly not the character. There's not much anger and angst in your life when you're invincible, practically immortal, and have the ability to fly into space without a suit...a pissed off Superman would be gayer than the last one.

It's all in the script. Superman is iconic to say the least. The S on the chest is enough to fill seats but as for competing with the Richard Donner films... CGI isn't going to gain that loyalty alone. The actors were great (maybe a little young) in the last one but the story didn't exactly leap tall buildings. Lexcorp NEEDS to be in play and Luthor untouchable by social standards. He needs to be smarter than Superman and the citizens. Once that's established, bring on Braniac and Myxlplik... then Doomsday. You can't bring in Doomsday too soon.

Lex Luthor is a great villain, when they do him right.

I'm not a HUGE Superman fan, but the villains they put in the movie are hurting the character. Superman is supposed to be the most physically dominant force in comics. So why has he NEVER had a descent formidable opponent? I don't want to see him try to out-think anyone. I want to see him use his physical dominance. PLEASE someone put a villain in a film that suits his style. If you want to use Luther...fine, but please do something where we can see a descent fight. Comic movies are at the stage now where there is no excuse to not make a action packed Superman movie.

Make Luthor a genuine master criminal like he is in the comics, a more Kingpin-ish character. With Mercy Graves at his side, and a public perception of a good, honest philanthropist, and then it would work. Otherwise, get Doomsday, or Parasite, or Maxima.

Spacey definitely made Lex way to corny in Superman Returns. I don't think it was his fault...it was the the direction of the film. I know Spacey is capable of better. I blame the script for the failure the previous film anyway. I mean...Mario Puzo wrote the original Superman and that's the caliber of writing talent they need to bring in for the next installment. Maybe a new director too. Oh...and while they are at it...cast a new Lois Lane please.

He was in alot of the old Superman movies so I don't mind as long as they bring another villain to the spotlight no Doomsday yet that would be making the *Spiderman Venom* mistake. Brainiac would be awesome to see. I think that's the perfect villain right now.

go ahead and bring back lex luther, but you have to have luthercorp. otherwise what power does lex have other than a physotic mind with plots that never work and the crew spends 2hr 30mins of talk just to have superman hurt for a minute then destroy his plan. make it more like smallville's superman. superman still not a dark character but all the other characters are darker and more mysterious. also i would bring in both brainiac and bizzaro for the 2nd film. (i read somewhere that this film was suppose to have lex luther and 2 other super powered villians) and for the 3rd film bring in doomsday, then tie it into the JLA film which needs to listen to the actors and fans...WAIT UNTIL THESE SERIES ARE OVER. thats what they are doing with avengers. wait until you finish the batman and superman series and the wonder woman, flash, and green arrow films. seriously. it wouldnt make any since to bring the JLA film out this early on. but back to the point at hand yea i say bring back lex luther WITH LUTHERCORP! and bring in brainiac (as the main villian for the film) and bizzaro (as the secondary villian, just to make things more complicated and complex) if your going to make a 2 and a half hour film, make it a action packed one worth watching, and can anyone say IMAX this time? returns may of been idk, but if this 1s good then make it an IMAX film. and lastly bring in doomsday AND a secondary villian like parasite, metallo, or lobo for the 3rd film.
