"Max Payne" Director Angry Over 'R' Rating

"Max Payne" Director Angry Over Submit Comment
The MPAA recently gave "Max Payne" an R-rating and director John Moore is not happy. The adult-only rating could have an affect on the box office take. But Moore also outlines what he sees as inequality in the system, saying, "The Motion Picture Association of America gave 'The Dark Knight' a PG-13 rating and basically sucked Warner Bros' c*ck."

The Max Payne video games all carried a Mature-rating, but Moore and 20th Century Fox went into filming the big screen adaptation, starring Mark Wahlberg as Payne, with a PG-13 rating as the goal.

"I have a serious amount of issues with the MPAA," Moore told Das gamer. "Did you know it was made up of volunteers? As if that somehow excludes them from some type of wrongdoing. You can't serve on it if you’re a homosexual or if you didn't grow up in a shared parenthood home. Go to their website and read their charter about what gives a fair and balanced view for typical parents."

Moore continued: "The MPAA will never publish the rules. They'll never tell a director, here's what's going to get you an R, here's what's going to get you a PG-13. The MPAA changes their rules willy-nilly and it depends on who's seeing your actual movie at the time. I felt good about Max Payne after coming out of the theater. I thought Max wasn't going to have a problem. And that's not the case. They're coming down on us pretty hard."

He explained that the MPAA simply stated that "Max Payne" felt R-rated. "What the f*ck is that, a group therapy session? You can't do that," he exclaimed. "They're meant to judge content, not intent. They said the movie felt dark."

Moore's anger stems from the fact that he and Wahlberg did their best to make the movie PG-13 and avoided adding scenes that could get them in trouble, even if they wanted them in there. "Mark has been quoted as saying he wanted to work harder rather than just use bad language to express emotion," he said. "I took a similar tact. I put a lot of kinetic violence in the movie because that's how the game feels, but I didn't go cutting people's heads off and ripping their eyeballs out just for the fun of it."

Finally, Moore feels that the R-rating will hurt the movie's box office numbers, due to the limited advertising opportunities. "You can't advertise an R-rated movie before 9 pm in most states. You can't advertise an R-rated movie in front of a PG-13 movie. There are some real hamstring rules of advertising."

The MPAA started as a good thing to ease the tension of political figures running blame games on films as means for social ills, but in today's day and age the MPAA needs to be reexamined. It's a bunch of horse crap. I bet you Steven Spielberg would have gotten this a G rating with his clout without the MPAA having seen one clip. It's MPAA without clear cut guidelines is worthless. I'm more concerned in, "Is this movie even good?".
