I saw the Movie preview at The Toronto Film Festival with Spike Lee and the stars. I thought that the movie was very powerful and I enjoyed it a lot.
It was long at almost three hours but there was enough action to keep my attention. I watched with my husband and son and they generally liked the movie also. The movie was unique because it showed black soldiers from the perspective of the black soldiers There was obvious racism towards the soldiers who were black and fought against the Nazis during World War 2.
Spike Lee introduced the film to the audience of almost 1500 people and he said that it was a story that needed to be told; and I believe he was right.
You have to be open minded while watching the film because it is from a different perspective. My husband enjoyed it because he said it was not like a regular war movie. My favourite scene was when a little child in Tuscany met a black person, who happened to be black for the first time in his life and thought that he was made out of chocolate. He actually licked the face of the soldier to see if he was made out of chocolate. The movie made me laugh and cry. The range of emotions which I felt while watching it made it one of my favourite movies and I would enjoy seeing it again in the regular theatre when it comes back. At the end of the movie, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to meet Spike Lee and tell him how much I
enjoyed his movie. He graciously shook my hand before he left the Elgin Theater. The movie received warm applause from the enthusiastic audience and I highly recommend that you see the movie and come to your own conclusions about how you like it. I liked it a lot.
