View Full Version : 'Superman Returns' a little underrated?

Somehow, early this morning, I found myself here at this interesting website and forum. I read the 'Superman Returns' preview and I was a bit upset. "I doubt Superman Returns will set the bar higher than the recent greats Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins, but it should be a quality addition to the genre." Um, are you serious? Of course this film will set the bar higher, if not on par with those films. We're talking about Superman, an American... no, more like an international icon. The fact that 'Returns' score is based on the John Williams' original 'Superman' score is a plus right there. Also, 'Returns' is using unused footage from the original films, most likely utilizing Marlon Brando as Jor-El. I mean, this isn't Tim Burton's 'Superman Lives' script starring Nicholas Cage as Big Blue, a script which got canned, thank God. This is 'Superman Returns', directed by Bryan Singer, starring Brandon Routh, a newcomer who understands the franchise and the character's legacy...

Personally, I say we're in for one hell of an epic.

I just read the preview, and it states exactly what you state. Superman is an icon, and that's why they have to be sure to get it right. It's a responsibility that a director might want, but would have a difficult time dealing with. That said, I'm not too sure about Bryan Singer. I thought his X-Men films were OK, at best. But I will agree that Tim Burton and Nicolas Cage would have destroyed Superman. I will see Superman in the theaters and X-Men also, because for some reason I believe that X-Men will be a better quality film, due to the director.

IMLX, I totally agree with you. There is no way in hell that I'm going to miss Superman Returns once it comes out in the theaters. And you're right Thorpe, Superman is an international icon, but being an icon is not enough to make the movie great right away. He was an icon when they made the awful Superman 3 and 4. He's still an icon, but I hope that they won't make another Superman 3 or 4. I hope they will try to emulate the 1979 original as much as possible.

I just feel that they got the wrong guy for ol' Supes. Not sure who'd they would cast in his place but not this guy. He looks a bit light in the loafers. Also, the costume is wrong to me. The big S is to small IMO. As for story. How many times do we need a origin movie. Don't we all know how he became Superman. I think we are in for a monumental flop. Drinks on me if I'm wrong. Sure we'll get a huge opening but I just see a Godzilla sized disappointment.

Drinks will be served at my place on the weekend following release. Limit one drink per person. Ticket stub required to recieve free drink.;)

I feel like, no matter what the Superman movie does, or who they get to play Superman, I will still see this movie, and love it. That's how deep this character is embeded in me. There is nobody else like Superman.

brig, I don't like the costume either. The red leather makes him look like he's wearing cowboy boots and the red color looks all faded.

What can you do, are you suggesting a Superman Makeover? Let's dump the boots, then put the underwear where it belogs... under the clothes. I believe this would be a start. Compare the latest Batman to the Adam West one. West wore the same outfit as the current Superman, but that all changed, and now Batman looks tough and scary. Just checkout the costume created by the lead graphic designer for the Tim Burton's Superman Lives. I think there is something to it.
