Same post as in the general community:
Just back from a preview screening of Cloverfield. My assessment of "Godzilla Meets The Blair Witch Project" was essentially correct. All the cleanliness of other large monster movies, or even alien movies like Independence Day, will not be had here. This movie is gritty and nasty. The monsters, large and small, show no quarter.
The documenting of the attack with a hand held camera is both brilliant and frustrating. It captures all the terror of those unlucky enough to be in the path of destruction, but because it is so accurately done, it also limits what the audience can see. Good views of the monsters, especially the large one, are fleeting---SPOILER ALERT---except towards the end when the chief videographer gets a close-up, including the inside of the creature's mouth as it eats him and spits part of him and the camera out.
All in all, a winner. I'm not sure if it is as brilliant as the ad campaign, but it will surely make a fortune. Enjoy.
