Synopsis from DVD Cover:
Homer accidentally causes an environmental catastrophe which could doom Springfield forever. Homer now must save the city and rescue his family. Springfield's usual characters and new favorites all turn up in the first ever movie length version of the hit TV show, 18 years in the making.
Quick Review:
I'm a huge fan of the show and as any loyal viewer, I have been looking forward to the big screen movie for years. Now, that it has come out, I realized that maybe I'm not such a big fan after all. In fact, I might even dislike the show. If a movie, eighteen years in the making, results in a story that doesn't provide a single clever joke, there might be something wrong.
The story itself moved along, but at a running time of only 87 minutes, it felt more like three episodes of the show. The actual plot revolves around Homer's careless attempt to get rid of the waste created by his friend (a pig). He ends up dumping it into the town's water supply, polluting it in the process. As a result, EPA steps in and places a giant dome over Springfield, causing all the local residents to blame Homer. The Simpsons family has no other choice but to run away.
Some of the best jokes in the movie can be seen in the trailers, which apparently are intended to make a third-grader giggle. Someone saying "I'm a wiener" and Homer being physically stuck between a rock and a hard place, is just not something I laugh at anymore. Although, the highlight of this mess, must be the fact that the filmmakers were able to get away with showing Bart's junk. It was a great scene, but one that lasts only a few seconds.
The DVD comes with two separate audio commentaries. The first one features Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Yeardley Smith, Dan Castellaneta, Mike Scully and David Silverman and the second one includes David Silverman (again) Rich Moore, Steven Dean Moore and Mike Anderson. Listening to the tracks, you will learn that the script went through 158 drafts and many other problems the filmmakers faced. In addition, the disc comes with 7 mediocre deleted scenes and "Special Stuff," which includes Simpsons appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "American Idol."
In Conclusion:
Over the years, the show has declined from a hilarious look at a dysfunctional family, to pointless attempts to have Homer get hit in the crotch. Unfortunately, the movie is more of the same brainless humor that is making loyal fans turn the channel. If you're a die-hard fan of the show, rent this, otherwise, avoid at all cost.
